Standard #2 (SIII)
Standard #2: Human Growth and Development - Teachers shall understand how children and adolescents develop and learn in a variety of school, family and community contexts and provide opportunities that support their intellectual, social, emotional and physcial development.
Reflection: - Throughout Seminar III, I proposed a question for my action research project dealing with cooperative base learning groups. With this topic in mind, I have the understanding that all my students, through cooperative groups, will bring a different view, knowledge, and different ideas into the group, causing a variety of knowledge and understanding and an unique and diverse classroom. When I read the book "36 Children," by Herbert Kohl, I also learned that every student has his/her own interest and comes from a diverse variety of families/communities which therefore is another way that a classroom becomes diverse. I also was able to create an Integrated WebQuest combining the disciplines of English and Social Studies. This task shows that I understand that children come from different backgrounds and are able to view this site and reflect on it from different viewpoints based on their past experiences and in turn brings talents and strength to learning. Lastly, I read Chapter 2 in "Possible Lives," which discussed Bilingual Education and how even students who may not be able to speak English can bring a different aspect to the classroom if we, as teachers, offer them support, guidance, and understanding to encourage their learning.
