Course Materials:

  • You are provided with 2 separate webfolio accounts on the School of Education server. Your EdFolio account provides you with a basic authoring toolset directly within the web browser. Your EdWeb account provides you with space for using more advanced web authoring tools.
  • For this course you are required to purchase Macromedia Flash MX 2004. This is your only required 'text'. The focus of the course is on creating media rich, interactive educational web site resources. Flash is currently the premier authoring tool used for this purpose. It is fun, challenging, and will provide you with hours of authoring enjoyment for the project you complete in this course, as well as your future authoring activities after the semester is over.
  • To purchase Flash MX 2004, go to
    http://www.academicsuperstore.com
(1-800-817-2347). The price is $95.95 (item# 701200). Remember to fax in a copy of your FDU student ID (you can also use your K12 school ID if you are a teacher). Fax No: 512-450-0263 (if you have a scanned version, you can also email it to ID@academicsuperstore.com). Remember, Academic Superstore will not process your order until they have received this proof of your academic eligibility.
  • Click on the screenshot of the basic Flash authoring environment below to visit Macromedia's overview of the software:

Visit a mapping activity web page using Flash developed for Saskatoon schools in Canada.

Course Work:
Your learning/working time in this course is split as follows:
  • 75% One Interactive Web Page: This is your primary project, and the focus of the majority of your time. Although only one web page, since it is developed using Flash technology, it will actually be perceivied by your viewers as a number of pages or screens. The first half of the course before spring break will focus on becoming familiar with the Flash authoring environment and a number of basic techniques. While you are learning these techniques, you will also begin structuring the outline or shell of your interactive educational web resource. At the start of spring break you should have the basic rough structure complete. After spring break we will focus on more advanced techniques as you begin to hone and polish successive drafts of your interactive web page.
  • 25% Structure of Web Site: Although you are concentrating on developing one very polished, interactive web page for your site, you must also keep in mind that it will become part of a larger website. After the semester is over, you will probably begin adding more resources to your website. Therefore, we will spend a little time considering the overall structure of your site and putting in placeholders for areas that you will want to develop at a future time.
