Resreach Problem Statement

-Students at F Elementary school first graders appear to lack the strategies necessary for decoding words and determining new vocabulary words by using phonic skills and context clues when they read.

-I suspect that this is the result of the first graders not having sufficient instruction and guidance in learning decoding strategies.
-I want all of the first grade students at F Elementary school to be able to apply strategies for decoding words and determining new vocabulary words by using phonic skills and context clues when they read.
-Therefore, I believe it is my responsibility to model how to use decoding strategies for determining words so they can apply the fundamental strategies of reading by first teaching my students context, picture, and phonics strategies while providing more one on one instruction of how to decode words.

Questions:
1. Will instruction in decoding strategies maximize my students ability to determine new vocabulary words?
2. What contributes to the effectiveness of teaching decoding strategies?
3. How does instruction in decoding strategies affect student attitude and performance in reading?
