Behaviorism

When speaking of behaviorism, it is the role of the environment in which one is in that is considered the determinant of behavior.  B.F. Skinner is associated with this philosophy.  The goal of education is to observe through scientific observation, and to identify through experimentation.  Thus, constructing environments that maximize learning, are developed.  The role of the student is to respond to environmental and behavioral stimuli; to become self regulated.  The role of the teacher is to manipulate the learning environment and present stimuli, using conditioning and social learning to shape student behavior.

In regards to the curriculum, or subjects taught, learning tasks in which behavior can be directly observed, measured, and evaluated are used.  On the other hand, the type of construction for the given philosophy, include programmed instruction that provides feedback on performance, behavioral contracts, as well as reinforcement.
