Computers As a Teacher's Aide

 
 
 

Rachel:

I have just completed my student teaching in South Orange, NJ.  I am presently an instructional aide for preschool autistic children in the West Orange School District.  Currently I am in the Quest Program and will be graduating May 05.  In the future, I wiil be pursuing my Certification of the Handicapped.

Standard one

Subject Matter Knowledge

Teachers shall understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, structures of the discipline, especially as they relate to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (CCCS), and design developmentally appropriate learning experiences making the subject matter accessible and meaningful to all students.

I have created a community service activity using microsoft word.  Students will write about what makes a good community.  I gave students a variety of exampless of the different jobs that people do which help the community and make it a better place.

Standard two

Human Growth and Development

Teachers shall understand how children and adolescents develop and learn in a variety of school, family and community contexts. This will provide opportunities that will support their intellectual, social, emotional and physical development.

During this semester I have created a technology integrated lesson.  Without the use of technology would not be as informative and valuable. 

Standard Three

Diverse Learners

Teachers shall understand the practice of culturally responsive teaching.

I have created  multimedia presentations on powerpoint as a way of teaching a lessons to my class.  These presentations will capture the interest  and reach the needs of diverse learners diverse learners and those who need a  more visual and hands on approach to learning.

Standard Four

Instructional Planning and Strategies

Teachers shall understand instructional planning, design long- and short-term plans based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, community, and curriculum goals, and shall employ a variety of developmentally appropriate strategies in order to promote critical thinking, problem solving, and the performance skills of all learners.

I created a websquest where students will be creating a sequal to a fairytale.    Students will be using a variety of websites that will be given to them for assistance when creating their story.

Standard Five

Assessment

Teachers shall understand and use multiple assessment strategies and interpret results to evaluate and promote student learning and to modify instruction in order to foster the continuous development of students.

I have created rubrics for all of my lessons to assess students on their work.  This will give individuals a better understanding of how they did and what they needs improvement.

Standard Six

Learning Environment

Teachers shall understand individual and group motivation and behavior and shall create a supportive, safe, and respectful learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.

I have developed a multimedia powerpoint presentation regarding a classroom discipline plan that students and their parents will be signing.  By the end of this presentation students will no what is expected of them and what the consequences are if they break the rules.

Standard Seven

Special Needs

Teachers shall adapt and modify instruction to accommodate the special learning needs of all students.

Throughout the semester I have created lesson plans that reach the needs of diverse learners and integrates a variety of hands on materials and sensible technology.

Standard Eight

Communication

Teachers shall use knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication techniques and the tools of information literacy to foster the use of inquiry, collaboration and supportive interactions.

I have created a fairytale websquest that involved students to work together in groups.  Each person in the group is responsible for doing their assigned job.

Standard Nine

Collaboration and Partnerships

Teachers shall build relationships with parents, guardians, families and agencies in the larger community to support students¢â¡Á learning and well-being.

I have created a website for parents to go to where they can be updated weekly on what kind of projects their child has been doing in the classroom. Any upcomming events and important information is posted weekly. I also have my contact information posted so they can communicate with me on a regular basis.

Standard Ten

Professional Development

Teachers shall participate as active, responsible members of the professional community, engaging in a wide range of reflective practices, pursuing opportunities to grow professionally and establishing collegial relationships to enhance the teaching and learning process.

I am completing my master in May 2005 and am persuing my special education degree.  I also work with preschool autistic children full time and continue to learn more and more each day.
