Irene:

Technology Self-Assessment, Personal reflections, and Goal Settings
Posted by Irene Jensen, 4/4/04 at 6:45:10 PM.         During my stay at Public School Number Two I was privileged to observe many classrooms and freely roam the halls in the school without question.  I became part of the faculty for that short time.  I have learned so much during this short period and all that I learned will remain with me.  I learned many direct and indirect lessons by observing Public School Number Two.  During my stay, I learned teaching strategies that are effective, which I plan to use when I become a teacher.  I also learned how students behave in certain classrooms.  I also learned why the students behaved well in a certain classroom and also if they were engaged.
While I entered in my field experience with some knowledge on computer technology, I also I learned new things during my stay in Public School Number Two.  Based on my self-assessment survey, certain technology skills I avidly know, while other skills I am starting to learn or have not learned at all.
There are many skills that I know superbly.  My understanding of computer hardware is I know the main parts of a computer by function not by name. I have learned the hardware of computers by experience when my computer has some hardware problems.  Based on this experience I know by the use of common sense roughly what is wrong with my computer.  I also know how to download software and find software on a computer.  Depending on the program I know how to use software.  With these skills I have an advantage on using this skill to help teach my lessons.  I also know how to search through websites and use it to my needs.  This gives me an advantage on instructional application of class web pages.  The programs I know very well are word processor, spreadsheets, and much presentation software.  I know almost all areas of a word processor but there is still room for improvement. I know how to use a spreadsheet but I still have to improve my programming skills when it comes to calculating numbers.  My understanding of instructional applications of presentation software is I know how to use many presentation software but not to its full potential. My understanding of addressing student learning styles in the technology rich classroom technology directs to so many styles of learning.
Also, certain technological skills I know enough to survive a few encounters.  I am beginning to become familiar with digital imagery.  I know beginner steps when it comes to creating images and I know some skills on how to use digital camera but I am not at a conformable level. My understanding of addressing issues of equity in the technology rich classroom, I have little experience on using technology to address issues of equity. My understanding of addressing student diversity in the technology rich classroom, I know how this would be used in the classroom but it would be difficult to address in technology being that not all programs are ≥diverse.≈
Certain technical aspects I have very little knowledge about.  One main skill I know little about is database.  I know what databases is used for and I know how they look but I have no idea how to create one.  In addition, I know little about creating a website. I was once a beginner webmaster but never launched my site.  I know how web pages are constructed but I do not know the language to create my own site.
Based on my observations and the Technology Survey, my personal goals are to improve my technology literacy.  I plan in time to improve all my areas of technology (those that I know well and those I have no experience in).  In the future, when I become a teacher, I plan to use technology in my classroom.  If I am very fortunate, I would like to teach an art program in my classroom or teach a class on computer arts.
