  Introduction

The time has come!! You are a young pharaoh in Ancient Egypt and must start preparing for your journey to the afterlife. Remember, this is the single most important trip you will take, not only for you, but for your people. The first step to this journey is to design a special case for your mummified body.  Follow the steps below to insure that your case will be ready for your journey.

The Task
As Pharaoh, you will be creating your own Egyptian mummy case. You want to make sure that your case reflects Egyptian religion and style of art.

The Process
  • Outline your body or someone smaller than you on tan butcher paper. Your coffin figure should be no larger than 4 feet tall.
  • After cutting out the figure, decorate it with Egyptian art, hieroglyphics, jewelry and props; for example a headdress and a portrait mask.
  • Draw facial figures.  Divide the bottom of the mummy case into sections using a variety of horizontal, vertical and diagonal patterns.
  • Decorate with Egyptian symbols.  Color with pastels or mixed powdered paints to simulate materials used by the Ancient Egyptians. You can also use the colors black, gold and bronze.
  • Choose a name for the Pharaoh you are presenting.  USe your hieroglyphic alphabet or the chart on page 99 to tell a story or give information about your pharaoh on the coffin. Be sure his or her name appears on the coffin in a cartouche.  The years he or she lived should also be labeled and the correct Kingdom of Egyptian history should be identified.
  • Your mummy case is due in school on Monday, January 6, 2003.  Bringing it in late will result in points being deducted from your grade each day it is late.
  • Remember art always tells a story about the culture of the people who created it.  Be prepared to present your mummy case in class and explain the pictures you have included and the information you have written in hieroglyphics.  If you are including pictures of Egyptian gods or goddesses , remember to explain who they are to the class.

Conclusion

Your task is complete, but remember,  it is only the first of many you must take before you make your way to the underworld.  As Pharaoh, you must now lead your people and show strength, to prove to the people you are strong enough to make it through to the afterlife.  The life of your people is in your hands!! Good luck!!
