Research notes
Posted by Annamaria Rigolio, 6/9/04 at 4:56:49 PM.

Our approach to discipline aims to build, rehabilitate and strengthen character, allowing for growth and personal commitment to change.

Vision of Building Citizenship:

In an effort to build citizenship, we practice inclusive disciplinary procedures that encourage positive student behavior. Through purposeful community experiences, students gain an understanding of their role as active, constructive community members. We are comitted to involving students and parents in the disciplinary process. This encouraged participation is aimed at customizing consequences according to student needs. Our intention is to provide students with authentic experiences, fostering an understanding of citizenship and responsibilities. From our experience in researching effective disciplinary procedures, we have arrived at a set of criteria that will define purposeful disciplinary practices.

Criteria:

Teachers and staff are to acknowledge minor, cancerous behaviors that occur in class and within the school environment by conferencing with students invlolved and completing a narrative in which the following criteria are addressed: names and ages of students involved, nature of behavior, consistency of related behaviors, action plan to prevent future negative behaviors.

Students are evaluated quarterly regarding their role in upholding a caring environment.

At least four times a year, parents will share strategies with and receive feedback from other parents to promote disciplinary procedures that model real-life experiences and will receive feedback

During each year of a student's education, (pK-12), teachers must allocate class time to addressing at least three of the following topics: community involvement, anger management, respect for self, others and community property.

Opportunities approved by administration, parents, teachers and community members
must provide students with authentic experiences in every class that foster an understanding of citizenship and responsibility.

(All discipline must lead to learning experiences.)---Needs to be looked at---

What to work on next week:

Cycle of Reflection: (Conceptual Framework) Evidence of Growth (p3)

  • Reflective log--written by involved teachers, administrators, students, parents (Target specific criteria)
  • Tally what worked and what did not work (data)
  • Focused, oral interview
  • Log number of times teachers meet, work accomplished and participants
  • Could use logo for our engine, could use flow chart to demonstrate cycle of reflection

(Be sure to define each criteria so that reflection and data collection are possible and an element of change can be brought in.)
