Roosevelt Elementary School is in a family style community in a suburban area. The socioeconomic status is generally middle class. In total there are 357 students enrolled in this school. The racial break down is primarily English with 63%, and then Spanish with 27%. Classroom size is broken into groups of 19 students. These classrooms are configured by grade level (K-6), specials (art, computer, music) and are self-contained. As of 2007 there are 20 students in the Special Education program and 3% of the students in the entire school are in ESL (English as a Second Language). There are a select percentage of students with IEPs (Individualized Education Program) on average of 13% from the whole school.
The school's climate is very productive and friendly. Students are constantly on task and encouraged to do more. The teachers are respectful to the students and in return expect respect back. I did not see any problems between students in the classroom. Together they completed task and worked as a team. The students seems
ed to know their role as a student and their purpose for being in school.
Each year students are given a student handbook to which holds a listing of the rules and regulations for the students. The rules are easy and basic, but of course they are not always followed. Some rules are as easy as being on time, complete all assigned homework, come to class prepared, share, no cutting in line and take turns.
Unfortunately I was unable to obtain a teacher¢â¡Ás contract or a policy handbook. The time that I completed my field experience my principle was in the process of retiring. My "fill in" principles did not have the material in order for me to give more information about the school.
