Professional Standards
These are the New Jersey Professional Standards stated in my own words.
Standard One: Subject Matter Knowledge
Teachers must have and maintain the subject knowledge of the subject matter that they are teaching. They must be aware of how that knowledge is related to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. Along with the understanding of the material being taught, teachers must also be able to incorporate that information into lesson that creates an influential and appropriate learning experience for the students.
Standard Two: Human Growth and Development
Students learn in a variety of different learning styles. They also develop emotionally and physically at different rates. Teachers must be aware of these differences in their students and be able to develop a learning environment that meets all the students' needs.
Standard Three: Diverse Learners
Teachers need to be aware of the varying cultural backgrounds that their students come from, and how those backgrounds will effect the way a student will behave in class towards the teacher and the others students in the class, or how it may effect their ability to do an assignment.
Standard Four: Instructional Planning and Development
Teachers should be able to develop plans for long and short term learning. They should be ale to incorporate knowledge from outside the classroom into those plans to better insure the students understanding. A variety of learning skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills, should be present in those plans.
Standard Five: Assessment
Teachers should use a variety of assessment strategies when assessing their students. With the knowledge that students ability to display their understanding of a subject matter may be best done in any of a variety of methods they may include written, performance, or artistic displays.
Standard Six: Learning Environment
Teachers should create a safe and positive learning environment where students are invited to participate in positive social interactions with their peers and develop a sense of self-motivation. Students should feel comfortable to experiment and learn.
Standard Seven: Special Needs
Teachers should be aware of any special needs that a student might have and adopt their class and/or lesson to accommodate that student. They should be aware of any special resources that are available for those students with special needs
Standard Eight: Communication:
Teachers should know and use effective communicates to foster interaction in the classroom, as well as, inquiry and understanding of a subject.
Standard Nine: Collaboration and Partnership:
Teachers should be an active member of the school and community. They should be able to form an environment were interaction with colleges and with parents/guardians is welcome and encouraged.
Standard Ten: Professional Development:
Teachers should continually look for ways to better themselves as an educator. They should be remaining up to date on any knew developments in education, their field of expertise, and the community in general.
