Learning Activities

Language Arts

Hidden Word Game- Give each student an erase board/chalkboard.  On the front board write words/blends/letters depending on what skill you are working on.  Cover the words with a piece of paper.  Tell the class what the first word is and have the class write it on their boards.  Have one student tell you how to spell it, then remove the paper on the front board.  Tell the students to get up and do an activity such as jumping jacks and the same time they spell the word out loud.

Wiki Sticks and Poems - Take a poem that you have been learning for the past few days.  Have each student go up and use the wiki sticks to circle a letter or word in the poem.

Create Live Words - Pass out letter cards to the students until all the letters are passed out.  Say a word and the student's holding the letters to make that word should go up to the front of the room and hold their cards together to show the word.  Ex. If the word is "dog" the three student's holding the "d," the "o," and the "g" should go up to the front of the room and form the word.

Short Vowel Charts - Make a chart for each vowel using sentice strips and pictures.

Math

Dice Game- Get a big foam die.  Have a student roll the die and say what number it landed on.  The student can then choose an activity like sit-ups or frog jumps for the class to do while they count up to that number.  Give each student a turn.  This game can be altered by choosing a number to be added onto the number rolled.  So if you pick three for the class to add on and a student rolled a 5 then it would be 5+3=8 and the class would do the chosen activity while counting to 8 instead of 5.

Number Recognition Action Cards- Get a stack of number cards.  Pick a number that the students need to identify as you flip through the stack.  Tell them when they see that number to get up and do an action such as hop on one foot while they count up to that number.

Individual Number Cards/Show Me How To Make?- Give the students their one number cards 0-9.  Have your own set up on the front board.  Choose a number family to work on like the teens family or twenties family.  Say a number in that family and have the class use their cards to make that number.  Have one student tell you the answer and you show them the number with your number set.

The Buzz Game- Have the class form a circle.  Choose a number for the class to count up to.  Go around the circle having the students count up to that number. The student that ends up saying the chosen number gets buzzed and they are out of the game.  Keep repeating until all but one student has been buzzed.  That student is the winner.  This game can be played with 1's,2's, 5's, and 10's.
