Goals & Philosophy

This therefore is Mathematics:
     She reminds you of the invisible forms of the soul;
     She gives life to her own discoveries;
     She awakens the mind and purifies the intellect;
     She brings light to our instrinsic ideas;
     She abolishes oblivion and ignorance which are ours by birth.

Teaching Goals & Educational Philosophy

My Educational Philosophy:

I want to share with students two ideas I believe are critical.  First, mathematics is both an art and a science.  It is science because it is a set of logical rules for explaining the nature of things.  It is an art because it reveals and explains truth with great ease and beauty.  I want to share my love of math with my students.  Second, I believe that every student can be successful at math.  Confidence and self-esteem can blossom in the mathematics classroom, and that self-confidence can carry over into all of life's endeavors.

My Professional Goals:

My primary goal is to instill a love of math in students of all abilities.  Appreciation of its beauty and power are achieved through success, and this is true at all grade levels.  To all students, but especially young women, who think they can't "do" math, I say emphatically, "Yes, you can!", and we will discover this together.

Together is the key word:  teacher and students as partners in the discovery.  My students will be continually challenged, but so will I, as I discover how best to break material into pieces that they can digest.  There is no one way for all students to understand the magic.  There is only the certainty that every day I will have to figure it out all over again, as the students change, as the material changes, and I, as a teacher, change and grow.  Magnified personal growth and maximized academic achievement- these are my goals for my students, and for myself, every day in the classroom.
